Yale Art Gallery and Artspace New Haven Announce Doran Artist-In-Residence Awardees

Five Connecticut-based artists have been awarded financial support, other resources, and a group exhibition. The awardees include Leonard Galmon, Ruby Gonzalez Hernandez (above), Allison Minto, Julia Rooney, and Joseph Smolinski. NXTHVN Announces the 2021-22 Fellowship Awardees

NXTHVN has announced the 2021-2022 Studio Fellows: Layo Bright, John Guzman, Alyssa Klauer, Africanus Okonon, Daniel Ramos, Warith Taha, and Patrick Quarm and its two Curatorial Fellows: Marissa Del Toro and Jamillah Hinson. The group will receive a stipend, professional studio space, and subsidized housing over the course of the next year, beginning July 12, 2021, and concluding on May 31, 2022.

Director & CEO Min Jung Kim Leaves NBMAA

A message from the New Britain Museum of Art explained that Min Jung Kim will be leaving her post as CEO and Director for another opportunity. Dona Cassella, Chair of the Board of Trustees, will serve as Interim Director during the transition period.

Application Season

The Connecticut Office of the Arts has opened several grants and other opportunities for artists and art organizations. The deadline to apply for the Supporting Arts Grant, which supports arts organizations and municipal art departments, is July 11. The review of applicants for the Artist Fellowship Program closes on September 22. And finally, nominations for the State Troubadour are due by August 10.

Bailout Gallery Returns

Amira Brown’s Bailout Gallery has re-opened, this time with sales of artworks supporting Build Palestine. With works by Jeff Ostergren, Nate Lerner, Brown, among others, the exhibition was covered in the New Haven Independent. Preview the complete online gallery here.

Through July 9 | Folded Cyanotypes and Formworks: Fritz Horstman

The inaugural solo show of cyanotypes and other form works by Fritz Horstman at Jennifer Terzian Gallery in Litchfield will close on July 9. Watch artist and Education Director at the Albers Foundation Horstman give an overview of his process-based works here.

Through July 18 | Recollections Revisited: Jason Wallengren

Born in Connecticut, Wallengren spent many years living abroad in Germany. For his solo exhibition inside the Judy Black Memorial Park and Gardens in Washington Depot, Wallengren draws from these experiences in his exuberant body of large-scale paintings. See examples of Wallengren’s work on his website.

Through July 25 | As the palm is bent, the boy is inclined

In Hartford at Real Art Ways, a solo exhibition of new work by 2020 Real Art Award recipient Kevin Quiles Bonilla features video, photography, installation, sculpture, and performance. Through archival research at the Library of Congress and his own familial history, Bonilla explores “colonization through photography,” while, “unearthing the construction of an identity and a historic heritage.”  A performance by the artist titled There’s a rumble beneath the tarp will premiere online on Thursday, July 8, at 6:30 p.m.

At New Haven’s Ely Center of Contemporary Art, the Solos 2021 series highlights featured artists selected from the open call, with works by: Kevin Van Aelst, John Arabolos, Allison Baker, Gordon Skinner, and Jeff Slomba. Check out my Studio Visit with Jeff Slomba here.

THROUGH AUG 22 | ROOTS TO BENEVOLENCE

This exhibition displays the work of NXTHVN’s Inaugural Apprenticeship Program. With paintings, drawings, digital art, music, and writing, the show documents a challenging year for five New Haven teenagers while marking the beginning of their careers. THROUGH SEPT 12 | A FACE LIKE MINE

The Mattatuck Museum collaborated with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston on this exhibition which celebrates 100 years of African American figurative art. The show comes from a series of American art exhibitions created through a multi-year, multi-institutional partnership formed by the MFA as part of the Art Bridges + Terra Foundation Initiative. Sylvia Bonney Halcyon Lounge & Stanley Black & Decker Makerspace — Grand Opening | Thu, July 1, 2 p.m.

The re-opening of the historical Landers House will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to share the newly renovated space at 2 p.m. followed by live music throughout the afternoon with the Survivors Swing Band at 3-4:30 p.m. and the Brian McDonald Duo 5:30 p.m. Drinks will also be available at the Art Happy Hour bar, opening at 5:30 p.m.

There’s a rumble beneath the tarp | Thu, July 8, 6:30 p.m.

In conjunction with the artist’s solo exhibition at Real Art Ways, 2020 Real Art Award recipient Kevin Quiles Bonilla will premiere an online performance. Register for the free event here, and additional information about the show is available here.

Virtual Artist Talk: Lucia Hierro | Thu, July 14, 6 p.m.

Artist Lucia Hierro will join Senior Curator Amy Smith-Stewart in a virtual artist talk to discuss the artist’s first solo museum exhibition at the Aldrich.

Vanessa German and Anne Collins Smith with Cynthia Schwarz | Fri, July 30, 12:30 p.m.

This conversation between artist Vanessa German and curator Anne Collins Smith is the keynote for the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Students and Mentors Institute in Technical Art History.
